South Sudan

Agriculture and Rural Development Expert*

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Juba, Central Equatoria state, South Sudan, with frequent travel to project locations in the country.

As Agriculture and Rural Development Expert at Welthungerhilfe's (WHH's) South Sudan Country Office, you will report to the Head of Program Development, Quality and Strategy and work in close collaboration with the Head of Program Implementation, Sector Experts and Heads of Project. You will provide strong and effective technical leadership for the development and quality of WHH South Sudan Agriculture and Economic development programs continuously analysing the context and identifying new program ideas, approaches and potential partners. You will represent the organization in relevant fora and with various stakeholders: national line ministries, clusters and partners, in line with WHH´s overall global and country strategy, contributing to increased competitiveness and quality of programs implemented in South Sudan. You promote integrated programming through a lens of sustainable and resilient Food Systems and oversee the application of appropriate Agriculture and Economic development approaches to early recovery/transitional and development response.

Your responsibilities

  • Ensure adoption of innovative technical agricultural solutions in line with WHH’s Country and Global strategy, with a particular focus on climate-smart food systems and integrated programming
  • Provide Heads of Projects and Project teams with advice and guidance on feasible models for cash programming and agriculture that are climate-sensitive and appropriate to the context
  • Ensure high-quality project designs in your sector incorporating project management standards, cross cutting themes and minimum technical requirements for projects
  • In collaboration with the MEAL Manager and Sector Experts: Ensure contextualized monitoring and needs assessments, programme monitoring and evaluation as well as structured learning in the projects
  • Lead the anticipatory planning to increase livelihood resilience and lessen impact of climatic and non-climatic shocks on communities we serve
  • Develop and roll-out the Food Security and Economic Development strategy for WHH South Sudan, ensuring the development and consolidation of integrated approaches with other sectors
  • Ensure WHH participation and strategic partnerships with line ministries, clusters and technical working groups and coordination fora that promote resilient food systems and climate-resilient approaches
  • Facilitate technical support to Heads of Projects and field teams through site visits, coaching/mentoring and training on Food systems approach and other models for agricultural and economic development

Your profile

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar position in a development and/or recovery programming environment, including at least 2 years of experience in a senior project management position
  • Technical expertise in Agriculture, Agri-Business or Rural development obtained from education (graduate degree level) and field experience in similar contexts
  • Knowledge in protection mainstreaming, community engagement, community capacity building, and/or community-development oriented programming and DRR approaches, including environmental analysis
  • Knowledge of systems approach to programming
  • Knowledge and skills in market analysis, cash-based interventions and market-based programming
  • Enhanced collaboration and networking skills and openness to learning in new contexts
  • Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in Welthungerhilfe's project countries
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English; Arabic language skills would be an asset
